How to write a letter your future self will want to read

Write the way you'd talk to a close friend who knows everything about you. Start with today: what an ordinary day looks like, what's on your mind, what you're proud of and what you're worried about. Then write what you hope will be true when the letter is opened, and the one or two things you're working on to get there.

Be specific. "I hope you got healthier" is hard to look back on. "I hope you're walking every morning before work, like I'm trying to now" gives future you something to measure. End with something kind, because the person reading this will have had good and bad days you can't see yet.

Our guide on how to write a letter to your future self has a full template, more prompts and an example letter. For a smaller daily version of the same idea, try future self journaling.

Frequently asked questions

Is my letter private?

Yes. The letter is written and saved in your browser on this device only, and nothing is uploaded or sent anywhere. The calendar reminder holds just a title and the date, not your letter. Press Clear to delete the saved draft.

Can this send the letter to me by email later?

No. This tool never sends anything, so it can't email you. Instead, print the letter or save it as a file, then add the calendar reminder so your calendar tells you when to open it.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

The saved draft is deleted with it. Before you close the page for good, print the letter, save it as a PDF from the print dialog, or download the text file, and keep that copy somewhere you will find it.

How far ahead should I set the open date?

One year is the most common choice and long enough for real change. Five or ten years works well for big life questions. A shorter date, like New Year's Day or the end of a challenge, is good for a specific goal.
